Employee Motivation


 


"Employee motivation is defined as the level of energy, commitment, persistence, and creativity that workers bring to their jobs" (Jouany & Martic, 2020). Motivated employees are the pillars of the success of an organization. They are happy workers, work hard in a productive & proactive manner, target achievers, raise profit & stay long by contributing their maximum for the employer. Every company is running to achieve a goal & inspired workers will increased the productivity.

Motivated employees have got below mentioned significant set of skills and deliverables. (Jouany & Martic, 2020)

·         Have a good impact on other employees

There is no defined process or guideline to identify the time taken to implement or enhance employee motivation. However, it could be categorized as short term & long term techniques. Short term techniques could be implemented & experienced in a very short period of time while there should be proper planning & analyzing for long term techniques in order to measure whether staff are motivated. Organizations must have their own ways of getting employees engaged, but maintaining & improving employee motivation is very challenging.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – How to motivate your staff

Employee motivation has become one of the important goal of any organization. An organization needs to have a clear visibility & understanding on how they continue to maintain long lasting performance driven culture & employee morale.

It was identified that employee will be motivated when all the required needs are fulfilled. Nowadays people are doing a job not only to get a good pay out, but also to get their skill levels improved while gaining professional qualification. He demonstrated this by creating a pyramid to show how people are motivated. Employee should be satisfied with the lower level needs and then only they will work towards of satisfying upper levels. (Cherry, 2022)

Hierarchy of needs: 

  • Physiological needs: basic needs for survival such as air, sleep, food, water, clothing
  • Safety needs: security, safety, stability
  • Social needs: association, affiliation, friendship
  • Self-esteem needs:  respect and recognition, prestige
  • Self-actualization needs:  morality, creativity, personal development, learning

Signs of demotivated employees 

Demotivated employee can affect the overall performance of the team. There could be various reason for staff demotivation. Staff always expects appreciation & proper working environment with manageable workload. If management doesn’t have a clear understanding of the staff requirements, staff gets demotivated & below would be the signs of staff demotivation. (angels, 2022)

  • Lack of punctuality – arriving late to work
  • High employee turnover
  • Change in mood towards colleagues
  • Increased absence
  • Lack of focus, and a distantness from colleagues
  • Inappropriate or negative comments
  • Lack of input
  • Increasing reluctance to take on more responsibility
  • Drop in productivity

 

Benefits of employee motivation  

Employees should be rewarded & recognized as an appreciation of their hard work. It motivates them to do better in their work assignment with more involvement to achieve organization goals while achieving their personal goals. (Perkbox, 2022)

How to measure and maintain employee motivation 

Although there are few identified ways of measuring whether staff are motivated, most proven method is know how employees are really feeling their current job scope. Constant monitoring, having personal chats & identifying staff demotivation are vital for organization leaders & managers. It’s not required to wait until bi-annual or annual survey is conducted as staff might live with their issues for long time & this will result in reducing employee productivity & employee turnover. (Haiilo, 2022)

Having a good understanding on using appropriate method to motivate staff is very crucial. Employees are different from person to another and knowing suitable motivation factors to use will result in increasing staff satisfaction & productivity. (HEATHFIELD, 2020)

Conclusion

Employee Motivation is crucial and essential for an organization. The attitude of the employees towards their work improve the quality of work.

Organizations should have good leaders who can motivate and guide employees to achieve goals. Managers need to continue of having employee engagement activities and provide frequent negative or positive feedbacks. Assigning responsibilities make them feel that they are involved in certain operation related matters and they will contribute in all possible ways to meet the end objectives.
